The Mozambique national team (the Mambas) landed in Guinea-Bissau in the early hours of this Monday, after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Mali in the fifth round of qualifying for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The Guinea-Bissau national team, the Djurtus, returned to their homeland after drawing 1-1 with the Eswatini national team, in a match played in South Africa on Friday.
The Mambas now only need a draw against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday (19-11) to secure their sixth appearance in the final phase of the African Football Championship (CAF).
The Mambas now lie second in Group I with eight points, three more than Guinea-Bissau.
Mozambique’s 0-1 defeat to Mali postponed the decision until the last round of the Group I qualifiers. Had the Mambas beaten Mali , they would have secured qualification at the Zimpeto National Stadium. Had they drawn, they would still have qualified for Africa’s biggest football competition as a result of the draw between Eswatini and Guinea-Bissau.
Mozambique played well on Friday, especially in the second half, when, with coach Chiquinho Conde’s changes, the team gained more consistency.
The national team created many goal opportunities, with Geny Catamo and Bruno Langa featuring largely, but were unable to convert chances into goals. Kamory Doumbia’s goal for Mali ended up being decisive in the game.
Mali is the only team in Group I that has already secured qualification.
