Mozambique: Japan donation to finance education, health projects
Only 11% of health units in Mozambique have all the basic equipment needed to provide care, according to the National Inventory on the Availability and Readiness of Infrastructure, Resources and Health Services.
The survey, consulted by Lusa, analyses the situation of 1,643 public health units, of which 1,575 are primary level, 54 secondary level and seven at the following levels.
According to the inventory, only 11% of the assessed health units have an adult and children’s (weighing) scales, a thermometer, a stethoscope, a blood pressure device and a source of electricity for arterial observation, equipment that the study considers basic for health care provision.
The items with the highest availability in health units are scales for adults and children (92% and 91%, respectively), followed by a thermometer (84%).
The source of light for observation is the least available equipment (19%), referred to in the inventory.
The inventory stated that the average national availability of the elements needed for infection control in health facilities is 66%.
The health units of Inhambane province (75%), Manica (75%) and Maputo city (73%) have the highest average availability of staff necessary for infection control while those of Niassa (53%) and Nampula (58%) have the lowest.
The average availability of drugs was 55% on the day of the survey, which means that the health units had on average eight drugs out of the 15 evaluated.
The provinces of Cabo Delgado (59%), Tete, Manica and Gaza (58%) have health units with the highest average drug availability.
More than three quarters (94%) of the health facilities visited offered family planning services, 90% had combination pills and less than half (48%) had emergency contraceptive pills.
The male condom is the third most available method in health facilities, with vasectomy and lacquering the services with the lowest availability.
