One of the largest cargo ships in the world, measuring around 300 metres in length, docked at the Port of Beira, in Sofala province, central Mozambique, last Friday (22-11).
The ‘Post Panamax’ vessel carries 1,800 containers with various cargo and belongs to an international shipping company.
Miguel de Jenga, Operations Director at Cornelder de Moçambique, the Port of Beira concessionaire, said that the arrival of the ship signalled the progress of the port infrastructure in terms of regional competitiveness.
In turn, the production manager of the Mozambican Dredging Company (EMODRAGA), Aarão Massingarela, told Radio Mozambique that, in order to receive the cargo ship, around 80,000 cubic metres of sediment had been removed from the port access channel.
The Port of Beira is one of the most modern ports in Africa. It is strategically located in the centre of the Mozambican coastline and has rail and road links with the main markets in Southern Africa, such as Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The Port of Beira is managed by Cornelder de Moçambique, and is considered one of the most efficient ports in southern Africa.
