Mozambique has registered one more death from Covid-19, bringing the total to 21, on a day when there were 45 more cases, rising to 3,440, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday (August 25).
The 54-year-old victim was admitted to Maputo Central Hospital on the 20th with chronic illness and respiratory difficulty, having lost her life the next day, said Benigna Matsinhe, deputy director of Public Health, in updating pandemic data at the Ministry of Health in Maputo.
” He was tested for Covid-19 on the day of his admission and the result came out positive on the 23rd, a day after his death,” Benigna Matsinhe added.
From Sunday to Monday the country registered 45 new positive cases of coronavirus, bringing the total to 3,440, of which 3,192 are of local transmission and 248 are imported.
“The 45 new cases reported today are all of Mozambican nationality,” she said.
The new cases, distributed throughout the provinces of Maputo (08), Nampula (08), Cabo Delgado (12), Tete (04), Inhambane (01) and Maputo city (12), are in home isolation, indicate the health authorities.
The health authorities also announced that a further 158 people have recovered, bringing the total to 1,661 (48%), while another 10 people are hospitalised.
The city of Maputo, the country’s capital, has the highest number of active infections, with 904, followed by Nampula province, with 249, Maputo province, with 242, and the remaining regions continue with less than 200 active cases.
Mozambique has tested a total of 87,565 suspected cases and just over 1.8 million people have been screened since the first infection was announced on March 22.
Among African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases. Angola registers 96 deaths and 2,171 cases, followed by Equatorial Guinea (83 deaths and 4,926 cases), Cape Verde (37 deaths and 3,509 cases), Guinea-Bissau (34 deaths and 2,205 cases), Mozambique (21 deaths and 3,440 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (15 deaths and 891 cases).
