A man accused of faking the theft of a million meticais belonging to his boss has been detained in Maputo by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
The man was entrusted by his boss with withdrawing the amount from the bank, but instead of handing the amount over to the owner, he had another idea – calling two friends, whereabouts presently unknown, and faking an armed robbery.
He then went to the police station to report the incident, police spokesman Leonel Muchina said, expecting to go from there to his boss, crime docket in hand, and keep the proceeds.
“The young man claimed that he was ambushed by individuals who assaulted him with firearms. The police assigned agents to investigate the case, and they soon discovered that it was an entirely simulated act, a ruse with the intention of diverting the money,” Muchina said.
The discovery made it possible to recover 843,000 meticais, with efforts to recover the remainder still ongoing.
Also in the course of recent operations, the PRM have detained a man selling counterfeit deodorants and body cream made from water, eggs, lotion and other products, in the Xipamanine market.
“This individual collected containers from the trash, filled them with water and gel and other products, and put them up for sale in the market. He had been doing so since 2017, and we were only able to neutralise him as a result of [public] complaints,” Muchina explained.
When confronted, the young man confessed, but said that this expedient was the only way he had found to make money, since he could not get a job.
