One person died and three others were injured when a landmine exploded in Morrumbala district, Zambézia province, central Mozambique, an official source told Lusa on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in the town of Muera.
The device exploded as a family was burning rubbish after clearing their backyard, said Sidner Lonzo, spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Zambézia.
The explosion killed a 53-year-old man and left one person seriously, and two lightly injured, police said.
The injured were taken to Morrumbala hospital.
Unidentified explosive devices are a legacy of past conflicts in Mozambique.
The country declared itself free of anti-personnel mines in 2015, after more than two decades of a country-wide demining programme across the country, which at the time was one of the five most-threatened by the devices in the world.
However, several accidents have followed, the most serious of which occurred in September, 2020, when seven people died in an explosion in Pebane, also in Zambézia province.
