At least one person was shot dead, and three others were seriously injured in an attempted invasion of Quintos Mineradora, a mining company operating in Mogovolas district, in the northern Mozambican province of Nampula.
According to the Mogovolas district administrator, Felisberta Joaquim, the tragedy took place in Luluti Administrative Post, when a group of illegal miners was trying to invade a mining region on Friday morning. During the rioting, she said, the invaders set on fire two vehicles belonging to the company.
“The group was trespassing on the mining area, and, in an attempt to disperse them, the security guards ended up fatally shooting a citizen. Three security guards from the mining company were seriously injured in the incident and are now under medical care”, she said, cited in Monday’s issue of the independent daily “O País.”
