The victims of terrorism in Cabo Delgado live on a knife-edge. After seeing the situation on the spot, the Mozambique’s Ombudsman, Isac Chande, agrees that “men, women, children and the elderly” are in constant “despair, anguish” and cry out for help.
In this context was launched on Wednesday (02-12) a campaign called “Juntos Por Cabo Delgado” (“Together For Cabo Delgado”).
The intention is to obtain, over the next 30 days, support of all types in order to “alleviate the suffering” of people “forced to abandon their lands, their means of subsistence and their traditional roots, including places of veneration for their ancestors” by terrorism.
The Ombudsman recently visited accommodation centres in various districts of Cabo Delgado, and saw for himself the “serious humanitarian crisis that displaced people are experiencing”.
At the time, about five tons of food were offered through the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC). One thing was clear: no one institution alone can mitigate the suffering to which the population is subject. But support from different sides “can make a difference”.
“Cabo Delgado is Mozambique (…) and we cannot be unaware of the suffering of our brothers,” Chande said. What is reported or seen on television is not the full scale of what is actually happening in Cabo Delgado, where thousands of people have abandoned their possessions and left everything behind in search of safety.
“It is one thing to watch the images on television, another to be on the ground and see how people live day-to-day – their shortages and extreme needs,” Chande said. “Collection points for non-perishable goods and monetary donations will be announced,” he added.
Terrorism in Cabo Delgado has already displaced more than 500,000, according to recent government figures.
