After five years at the helm of the National Hydrocarbon Company (ENH), Omar Mithá was sworn in yesterday as strategic advisor on economic thought to the Presidency of the Republic.
Entrusted by Filipe Nyusi with the position of Economic Advisor, Mithá enters the Advisory Council of the Head of State, with extended powers making him a strategist of economic action.
The new advisor heard the five challenges that are to guide his actions in the new position from the head of state himself.
“As an advisor, we want to challenge you to be proactive and to read the signs of the nation’s economic pulse and, depending on the scenarios, provide technical support to the President of the Republic, in what respects the appropriate economic policies and strategies which may lead us to reach of our common desire to develop Mozambique,” Filipe Nyusi said in his speech.
President Nyusi also attributes to the new advisor responsibility for “supporting the strengthening of relations between the Government and multilateral agencies and in bilateral projects and specific programmes” as regarding technical issues in the economic sector.
The new advisor was also given the power to “elaborate economic and social development policy documents on issues ranging from economic integration to development financing”, and should support “building a vision on macro-policy development and appropriate economic policies, and produce recommendations on the implementation of the main policies”.
Regarding the relationship with other state organs that deal with economic and development issues, the President of the Republic demanded “greater dialogue”.
“You will also be required to have greater dialogue with the Prime Minister, Minister of Economy and Finance and other relevant and interested parties, in order to determine the scope and content of the advice to be provided, including relevant stakeholders from the private sector and civil society,” President Nyusi emphasised.
