The old bridge over the Save river between Inhambane and Sofala provinces will henceforth be used exclusively by light vehicles, following the inauguration of the new Save bridge today.
According to the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, Carlos Mesquita, the old bridge, now more than 60 years old, will be rehabilitated before being opened for use by light vehicles only, during which time it will be closed to traffic.
The new bridge, to be inaugurated soon by the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, will be used by all types of vehicles.
In addition to the new suspension bridge, built to withstand weather events and with greater water drainage capacity during critical periods, Carlos Mesquita announced a project to build another bridge over the same river on the boundary between the districts of Massangena in Gaza province and Machaze in Manica.
