Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 20th, more than 30 million Mozambicans will find out what assessment the Head of State makes of the about-to-end year 2022, when, In compliance with paragraph b) of article 158 of the Constitution of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi will address the Assembly of the Republic, and deliver his Annual Report on the General State of the Nation.
In what will be President Nyusi’s antepenultimate (third-to-last) annual report to deputies and Mozambican society in general, the expectation of the various stakeholders will be to learn whether or not the General State of the Nation is satisfactory.
It should however be recalled that, since 2016, the President of the Republic has not told Mozambicans whether the country is in good shape or no. In his 2021 Report, for example, Filipe Nyusi said that the General State of the Nation was one of “self-overcoming, reversal of negative trends and achievement of economic stability” without, however, saying whether this was good or bad.
In a year marked by the worsening cost of living, Mozambicans expect to hear the Head of State’s assessment of the implementation of the Economic Acceleration Measures Package, announced last August, with the sole aim of minimising the high cost of living.
Mozambicans are also interested in knowing what stage the fight against terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado is at, as well as the steps taken in the implementation of the process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR) of Renamo guerrillas.
The fight against corruption and the scourge of kidnapping are among other topics fuelling daily debate in society, at a time when people are feeling relatively frustrated with the results of the ‘hidden debts’ case trial.
