The President of Mozambique has sent a message of condolences to his Malawian counterpart, Lazarus Chakwera, following the death of the country’s vice-president, Saulos Chilima, and nine other people in an aviation accident on Monday.
Filipe Nyusi states in the message that, “at this difficult time, on behalf of the people, the Government of the Republic of Mozambique and myself, I would like to express our heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the people and Government of the Republic of Malawi, as well as to the bereaved families. We are close to you in our prayers and thoughts, praying that you will be blessed to allow you to bear the severe pain that plagues you due to this irreparable loss”.
Chilima was a true son of Africa, President Nyusi adds, having always been committed to Pan-Africanist values and patriotism, serving his country with the highest dedication to consolidating political stability in an environment of multi-party democracy.
“We will remember him for the role he played in deepening the political and socio-economic integration of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union. May your soul rest in eternal Peace!” the message reads.
Saulus Chilima, 51, was on his way to represent the Malawian government at the funeral of former minister Ralph Kasambara when the accident occurred. Also on board was former First Lady, Shanil Dzimbiri.
The plane’s crew had been advised against landing in Mzuzu due to poor visibility, and air traffic controllers had ordered it to return to Lilongwe. Unfortunately, contact with the plane was lost a few minutes later.
