Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi inaugurated on Monday in the districts of Panda and Jangamo, in the southern province of Inhambane, two new courtrooms as part of the presidential initiative “One District, One Court Building.”
During the inauguration ceremony, Nyusi expressed his concern about the high rate of crimes of passion and violence against women, girls and the elderly in Inhambane.
“These inaugurations take place on the eve of the Christmas and New Year holidays, a time characterized by greater movement of people and goods. That’s why we chose to address a topic related to violence against women and the elderly. These are phenomena that most affect women and girls and the elderly”, said Nyusi.
According to the figures cited by the President, in the first half of this year there were a total of 9,250 victims of violence across the country, including 4,556 women and over 3,000 children. In Inhambane province, 1,080 victims of violence have been treated this year, the overwhelming majority of whom are women and girls.
The other face of violence in Inhambane is the elderly, most of whom are abused on charges of witchcraft, a phenomenon that the perpetrators of this violence are never able to prove, justifying their actions on the basis of assumptions.
“We must put an end to violence against the elderly. Our elderly are our roots, references and living libraries”, he said.
The president said that with these inaugurations, the presidential initiative has completed the construction of six of the seven courts planned for Inhambane province, “hoping that the infrastructures will contribute to improving the services provided by judicial operators, delivering justice in a timely manner and respecting the law.”
