At least 560,000 people in the Greater Maputo region will benefit from the Sabiè Water Treatment Plant inaugurated on Wednesday by President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, who said that the project would mitigate the water crisis in the city and province of Maputo.
The Sabiè Water Treatment Plant has a capacity to treat 60,000 cubic metres of water in a first phase of operations, and later, 120,000 cubic metres.
President Nyusi said the Sabiè Water Treatment Plant would consign water supply restrictions to the dustbin of history, with clean water 24 hours a day.
The head of state professed himself well satisfied with the technology on display at the Sabiè Water Treatment Plant, especially given the strong contribution of young Mozambican engineers.
Budgeted at more than two billion meticais, the project is the result of a financing agreement between the Government of Mozambique and the World Bank.
Filipe Nyusi urged the residents of Sábiè, Moamba district and of Greater Maputo to use the resource responsibly.
“Water proved to be much more important due to the moment of pandemic that the world is going through, as it is essential for hand washing. Water is an essential resource for the country’s sustainable development,” the president said.
In turn, Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Osvaldo Machatine, said that his ministry was motivated to continue with more projects expanding access to water.
A representative of the World Bank in Mozambique, which financed the infrastructure, said that “the project is a success” and that the bank would continue to support the Mozambican government’s initiatives to improve the population’s standard of living.
