Mozambique: Collective effort needed to fight corruption - president
President Filipe Nyusi has just addressed the nation. Speaking from Palácio da Ponta Vermelha in Maputo, the Head of State announced that he decided to declare a new 30-day state of emergency in Mozambique, given the Covid-19 pandemic evolution in the country. At the same time, Nyusi announced a three-stage plan to gradually resume social and economic activities.
Nyusi said he has sent to Parliament this afternoon the decree on the new State of Emergency which enters into force on Friday, August 8 until September 6. This will give time for the new law on disaster risk management and reduction to be submitted to parliament and come into force. This new law will also covers pandemics., the President explained. It was also sent to Parliament this afternoon.
Meanwhile, the government has decided to move forward with three stages for a reopening of social and economic activities,
Stage one is for activities of low risk.
It starts on August 18, with, namely, the resumption of face-to-face classes in universities, higher education institutions, military academies, teacher training, technical-professional and health institutes,
On August 18 will also start the re-opening of religious services, with a maximum of 50 persons..
The number of people allowed in funerals rises to 50. However, any funeral of someone who died of COVID-19 may only be attended by a maximum of ten persons.
Stage two is for activities of medium risk. It starts on September 1, with the full resumption of technical professional face-to-face classes and the reopening of namely, cinemas, casinos and gyms, driving school classes and motorised sports. .
Stage three is for activities considered of high risk. It starts on October 30 with, namely the resumption of Grade 12 face-to-face classes. Other grades will resume as soon as the conditions are met.
All the previous preventative measures regarding social distancing and the mandatory use of masks remain in place.
“I decided to declare a state of emergency across the country, starting on August 8 and ending on September 6,” said the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi.
Addressing the nation on Wednesday night (05.08), the President of Mozambique started by giving the situation onto Covid-19 in the country: “The pandemic is far from over. Not only is the number of cases growing, the speed of contamination grows too. The number of hospitalisations and deaths grows. It is a trend that occurs in general worldwide. ”
And the statesman recalled that “the Covid-19 pandemic has generated a new reality on which no one has certainties. In all countries of the world, governments supported by scientists are facing doubts and testing solutions. All countries face the same winding path. They move forward one day and retreat the next day. This is not a lack of coherence or a lack of courage, it is humility and this is respect for the truth. No one in this world can safely predict the near future. ”
And given the situation in the country, Filipe Nyusi announced the bases that guide his decision: “We believe that our next steps are based on two fundamental lines of action: the first is the maintenance of Covid-19 prevention and control measures . The second is the guarantee that social and economic life follows its normal course ”
