Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, who is the new chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), on Thursday condemned the military coup in Mali, which removed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita from power.
“I add my voice to those of colleagues who lament and condemn what has happened in Mali”, said Nyusi speaking in his capacity as SADC chairperson during a video-conference, as part of a virtual summit of the African Union.
“This is a setback for Africa”, Nyusi declared. “Africa had democratically taken noteworthy and exemplary steps. We in SADC condemn this way of reaching power”.
“We think that the people of Mali, and all the stakeholders, should rethink matters and peacefully solve the problem”, he added.
The Mali coup began as a mutiny among troops in the town of Kati, but quickly escalated, with military units marching on the capital, Bamako, and seizing the President and other high ranking government officials. Keita was forced to resign, after dissolving the Malian government and parliament.
As usually happens in the wake of a coup, the rebellious soldiers have promised to hold new election, but did not say when. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has imposed sanctions against Mali, and the United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned the coup.
