Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday challenged the Mozambican police force to adopt a more robust stance to urgently eradicate terrorism, and organised crime including the frequent kidnappings of business people which are threatening the country’s economy.
Addressing the opening ceremony of a meeting of the Police Coordinating Council at the premises of the Police Science Academy (ACIPOL) in Maputo, Nyusi said the police must provide the public with the necessary information on crime and the actions underway in the framework of public safety, but must also hold educational programmes which will boost citizens’ participation in crime prevention.
The President stressed that it is the mission of the Mozambican police to ensure full respect for legality, through the adoption of adequate measures to prevent and fight crime and all acts that are contrary to the law, while also making sure that there is full compliance with the necessary measures to protect the security of the country’s borders.
The meeting of the Coordinating Council, Nyusi pointed out, is being held at a time when the country is relentlessly fighting terrorism in the northern province of Cabo Delgado and hotspots of attacks by the dissident “Renamo Military Junta” in the central region.
The increasingly sophisticated methods used by organized crime, he added, “are phenomena which demand a response capacity which is even more intelligent from our authorities, either for prevention or for criminal investigation”.
“The people are looking at this meeting as an opportunity to assess your work in all aspects”, Nyusi declared, “with a view to the urgent eradication of terrorism and of organized crime”.
