Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, on Monday called for the purging of the ranks of the Ministry of the Interior in order to strengthen internal security, as well as ensure order, security and public tranquillity.
Nyusi also warned of the need to redouble vigilance so that the country does not become a refuge for criminals dressed as police officers.
Nyusi made the recommendation, in Maputo, during the opening ceremony of a session of the Ministry’s Coordinating Council, which this year takes place under the theme “Ministry of the Interior, Improving Strategies Aiming to Defend National Sovereignty and Strengthen Internal Security, Facing the Challenges of Terrorism and Illegal Immigration.”
“The country’s internal security must be shielded. It is necessary to purify the ranks. No effort you undertake will be successful unless you have officers who share the common objectives for the defence of the Homeland and the national cause. Therefore, take to heart the need to carry out intensive internal work in order to remove from your midst all those who distract our attention while serving the world of crime”, he explained.
The Ministry of Interior should also remove all those who seek in their work an opportunity to extort from the citizen and commit acts of corruption.
He explained that, overall, it is in the interest of the state to increase the operational capacity of the police and the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) to respond in a timely manner to all internal security issues when requested by the people they are sworn to serve.
