The Mozambican health authorities have announced that the number of recoveries from the disease mpox (formerly known as monkey pox), in the northern province of Niassa, has risen from 14 to 20.
According to the National Director of Public Health, Quinhas Fernandes, speaking to reporters in Maputo at a workshop aimed at training journalists on how to deal with M-pox, currently, the country has 18 active cases of the disease, in Niassa, Manica, and Maputo provinces.
“Niassa has 13 cases registered in the districts of Lago and Marrupa. In Manica province there are two patients diagnosed with the disease in Chimoio city and Machaze district,” he said.
In the southern region, Fernandes added, the authorities recorded three cases of the disease in Maputo province. All are in Matola city, in the neighbourhoods of Khongolote, Boquisso and Tchumene.”
Fernandes explained that sex workers and miners are the main groups transmitting the disease in Niassa province.
“Lago district, in Niassa, is so far the most affected region in the country, with about 80 per cent of the cases. In this district, 14 cases are foreigners. It means that the cross-border movement in that region plays a very relevant role in the dynamic transmission of the disease”, he said.
So far, nobody has died from mpox in Mozambique, and 20 patient have made a full recovery.
The Health Ministry has continued to call on people to redouble their preventive measures by avoiding physical contact with infected people or those with suspected symptoms, washing their hands frequently, and not sharing personal items such as clothes or towels.
