The number of officially registered cases of infection by the new coronavirus rose on Wednesday from eight to 10 in Mozambique, Rosa Marlene, Director of Public Health, said in Maputo.
One case concerns a Mozambican student in Portugal who is over 18 years old, while the other concerns a South African citizen who is over 60.
The two new Covid-19 cases in the country were not tested at the National Institute of Health (INS), but in a private clinic in the capital of the country, O País reports.
The Mozambican citizen who studies in Portugal is currently in the city of Maputo and the South African citizen had not yet been located by the national health authorities, adds O País.
Surveillance teams are conducting investigations to obtain more details on the two new cases and to determine which contacts they have made and should be under surveillance, Rosa Marlene said.
The Institute of Health (INS) has tested 17 suspect samples in the past 24 hours, but all of them were negative, she added.
In total, from the beginning of the pandemic on 11 March to Wednesday, the INS has tested 284 suspected cases.
Health authorities already had 124 contacts under surveillance, a number that is expected to grow from the ramifications that will be outlined with Wednesday’s two new cases, Rosa Marlene said.
The number of deaths in Africa has risen to 196 in recent hours out of more than 5,700 confirmed cases in 49 countries, according to statistics.
