Some of the victims of terrorism who moved to Eráti have already returned to Chiúre, in the south of Cabo Delgado. The number of people assisted by the National Institute of Disaster Management (INGD) fell from 67,000 to 45,000, Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane said yesterday.
Last week, the number of internally displaced people taking refuge in Eráti, Nampula province, exceeded 67,000. The government says this number has now fallen to around 45,000, with many families have decided to return to their areas of origin in Chiúre district.
“Initially, we had around 67,000. Now there are around 45,000 to 47,000 there. This means that the number has started to fall, which presupposes that they are returning to their area of origin or have moved to another district,” Maleiane said.
Among the displaced are also school-age children who, due to the humanitarian drama, have not been going to school. Asked about this, the prime minister said that the government’s priority was providing food and accommodation for the displaced.
“The priority is to accommodate people, and that is what is being done. It was and continues to be a very big exercise. Some are in schools and others in tents. We have to give them at least something to eat,” he argued.
The prime minister was speaking in his Maputo office this Monday on the sidelines of a meeting with athletes.
The attack that caused the wave of displaced people took place on February 12th on the headquarters of the administrative post of Mazeze, in the interior of the district of Chiúre, where the insurgents set fire to the hospital, the secretariat of the administrative post and the residence of the head of the administrative post, according to the Chiúre district administrator.
