The number of defendants convicted in Mozambique dropped from 15,715 in 2016 to 14,216 in 2017, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE) study “Crime and Justice Statistics, 2017”.
The study showed that the percentage of convicted defendants fell from 77.4% in 2015 to 70.4% in 2017 and the number of people absolved increased from 22.6% in 2015 to 29.6% in 2017.
The number of absolved defendants rose from 5,928 in 2016 to 6,153 last year.
Between 2015 and 2017, the number of absolved defendants increased by 85% and convicted defendants rose by 25.16%, the study said.
According to INE, the number of criminal cases increased from 173,844 in 2016 to 196,383 in 2017 and the number of civil cases increased from 84,976 to 91,152 in those two years.
“There were more criminal cases recorded in relation to civil cases. In the period under review, civil cases increased by 15% and crimes by 26%,” the report said.
The overall number of incoming, completed and pending cases increased by 44%, 30% and 5%, respectively, from 2015 to 2017.
