According to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), in 2023, the number of companies operating in Mozambique grew by 2.2% compared to the previous year, to 91,752. About 29.7% of these firms were located in Maputo.
According to an INE report with data on business activity, the city of Maputo alone accounted for 27,263 active companies and establishments at the end of last year, an increase of 3.9% compared to 2022.
However, the province that grew the most was Niassa, in the north of the country, which closed 2023 with 2,984 companies and establishments in operation, an increase of 6.5% in the space of one year. Even so, Niassa still shows the lowest business activity by province in the whole country.
In 2023, the number of people working in companies and other establishments across the country reached 902,154, an increase of 2.2% in the space of one year. Of these, 346,632 were in the city of Maputo, the equivalent to 38.4% of the total and a year-on-year increase of 1.9%.
On the other hand, Niassa was the province with the fewest number of employees working in these companies – still only 22,513, despite the 1.9% growth compared to 2022.
Of the total companies accounted for in the INE report, 211 (0.2%) were public or state-owned companies, 1,217 (1.3%) were public limited companies [PLCs] and 29,115 (31.7%) were limited companies [LCs].
The INE report also included 8,486 (9.2%) sole proprietorships, 52,580 (57.3%) sole proprietors and 52 (0.1%) cooperatives.
