The river that divides the south from the centre of Mozambqiue usually runs five metres deep in January to March, but this year it sits at just 30 centimetres.
In a river which regularly causes flooding in the provinces of Gaza, Manica, Sofala and Inhambane, it is the lowest flow rate in 10 years. In 2009, waters reached 7.5 metres in depth, two meters above the safe level, and caused flooding in Vila Nova Mambone.
In 2013 and 2014, a 413 and 663 mm of rain were recorded, generating flows of 3.3 and 4.2 metres.
