Norway has announced support totalling $6.3 million (€5.9 million) to Mozambique through two agreements with the United Nations, one for sexual and reproductive health protection and the other for democracy promotion and elections.
One of the cooperation agreements, worth about 3.1 million dollars (2.9 million euros), was signed with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to bolster prevention and response services linked to sexual and reproductive health and to curb gender-based violence.
The armed insurgency that has affected Cabo Delgado for four and a half years has closed health facilities in eight districts, leaving over half a million people without support, including displaced women, the two partners said in a statement.
The beneficiaries will be women fleeing the conflict who face “a higher risk of complications during childbirth, without access to obstetric care,” as well as “women survivors of violence who may suffer greater vulnerabilities, without immediate access to protection services or post-violation care.”
“In response, the project will deploy maternal and child health nurses and mobile brigades” to the sites and will equip “the restored health facilities” with essential supplies.
The aim is to “meet the immediate and long-term needs of vulnerable women and girls affected by conflict in northern Mozambique”.
The multi-year project runs until December 2024 and is expected to support over 400,000 people, mainly women of reproductive age, adolescents, young people and people with disabilities from host communities and displaced communities in Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa provinces.
In another area, Norway and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have signed a US$3.2 million (three million euros) agreement.
The partnership aims to promote “free, transparent and inclusive elections, consolidating the respect for human rights, through the participation of civil society and strengthening institutions,” said Sissel Idland, head of cooperation at the Norwegian embassy in Mozambique.
The agreement is for three years (2022-2024), covering the next electoral cycle, which starts with the municipal elections in 2023 and ends with the general elections in 2024.
