Mozambique: Area 4 to invest US$1.5M in Community Programs in Palma

The Norwegian government has agreed to grant ten million Norwegian crowns (about 1.12 million US dollars) to the Mozambican office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) to support the Mozambican government’s efforts to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The interim Norwegian ambassador, Tom Eriksen, and the WHO representative in Mozambique, Djamila Cabral, signed an agreement to this effect on Thursday.

According to a WHO press release, under the terms of the agreement, the funding will benefit he central and provincial levels in coordinating an effective multi-sector response to Covid-19.
The funding will help strengthen epidemiological surveillance, early detection and the screening of contacts of people diagnosed with the disease. It will improve control of the infection, support the continuity of essential health services, and strengthen the human resources of the WHO office.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Eriksen said that, for the Norwegian government, WHO is a trustworthy partner, “and we have been working together on questions of world health for several years. I believe that this support will help WHO contribute to the efforts of the Mozambican government in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic”.
The Norwegian diplomat stressed the need to promote greater inclusion of vulnerable population groups, and to maintain essential health services, in order to respond to the country’s other priority health problems.
For her part, Cabral thanked the Norwegian government for its support, which “will improve our capacity to assist Mozambique in strengthening the national health system”.
