This Wednesday, April 7, marked the first anniversary of the disappearance of journalist with Palma Community Radio Ibraimo Mbaruco, whose whereabouts are still unknown.
Mbaruco, a colleague told Carta de Moçambqiue, disappeared around 7:00 pm, when he left his workplace after another working day. The source said that his colleague had sent him a message the same night, stating that he had been detained by a Defence and Security Forces (FDS) patrol.
With the invasion of the main town in the district of Palma, ‘Carta’ was unable to speak to the victim’s family. But, four months after Mbaruco’s disappearance, we spoke with his brother, Juma Mbaruco, who at the time said he had no information regarding his brother’s whereabouts. In fact, he told ‘Carta’ that the family was contacted only once by the National Criminal Investigation Service in connection with the case.
Journalist Estácio Valoi says the matter should have been clarified by the government, but that everything indicates that it is of little interest to the state. In fact, the FDS has never commented on the subject.
Meanwhile, the Mozambican Human Rights Defenders Network calls on the government to investigate the case thoroughly, and that it also investigate the barbaric murder of 52 people in Xitaxi, Muidumbe district, in April of last year.

For its part, MISA-Mozambique, the Mozambican branch of the Media Institute of Southern Africa, in a statement issued this Wednesday, says it “considers it the duty of the Mozambican authorities to help clarify this case, including the steps that will have been taken to its location”.
In its note, the organization complains that “all efforts to locate the journalist, including through contacts at the highest level of the government and institutions of the administration of justice in the Republic of Mozambique, have resulted in failure”.
