The four months of Mozambique’s state of emergency did not affect the circulation of products, mainly food, between Mozambique, Malawi, South Africa and other SADC countries, Minister of Industry and Trade, Carlos Mesquita, says.
During “the State of Emergency, the circulation of goods was ensured, so that people would not die of hunger,” Mesquita said, adding that other countries proceeded in the same way in the scope of “compliance with measures implemented” on account of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Minister of Industry and Commerce was speaking in Zambézia after visiting the Melosa border with Malawi in the district of Milange, where he learned about customs activities, the flow of goods at the border, and the collection of revenues for the state.
Of the 46 million meticais set as an annual target for the Melosa border, more than 26 million meticais has already been collected by way of custom duties on imports from Malawi, with the emphasis on clothes, vehicles and vegetables.
In the other direction, it is estimated that between seven and nine thousand tons of various agricultural products are exported from Mozambique to Malawi every month through the border at Melosa.
