The leader of Renamo said this Saturday that Henriques Afonso Dhlakama, the eldest son of the former party leader, can move forward with his intention to run in the presidential elections in 2024, but will not have the support of Renamo.
Renamo president Ossufo Momade says that Henriques Dhlakama possible candidacy for the presidency does not affect Renamo, and encourages him to move forward.
“We have no problem with his decision. This does not represent any threat to the party, because he is a free citizen, [free] to do whatever he wants,” Momade said on Saturday (12-09) during his five-day visit to Zambézia, Niassa and Nampula provinces.

Henriques Afonso Dhlakama, eldest son of the former Renamo leader, on Friday (11-09) announced his candidacy for the presidential elections of 2024, saying that he intends to prevent the country from falling off “a precipice”.
Will have no support from Renamo party
The candidacy was confirmed to Lusa by a party source, although the new candidate did not make references to any political party in his announcement. “We are on the edge of a precipice, and it is time for Mozambicans to react with the ferocity they have been known for throughout their history,” he said in the statement.
The Renamo leader made it clear that Henriques Dhlakama’s candidacy would not be supported by the party leadership.
“If he is going to run, we cannot create any problem for a citizen who wants to run [in the 2024 elections]. I think he is prepared, organised and convinced of what makes him think about challenging for the presidency,” Momade told a meeting of militants and Renamo supporters.
Invitation to Nhongo
The president of Mozambique’s largest opposition party took the opportunity to once again invite the leader of the self-proclaimed Military Junta, Mariano Nhogo, to abandon the strategy of attacks his group has been pursuing in Sofala and Manica and join the Demobilisation, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR) process.
Ossufo Momade is touring the country revitalising his party’s electoral offices for the upcoming 2023 municipal and 2024 presidential elections.
“Nampula is a party stronghold, so I came here to take the pulse of the party at provincial level. We will hold several meetings to gain perspective on what the results will be in 2023,” Momade said.
Renamo party governs eight of Mozambique’s most important municipalities, namely the city of Nampula, Angoche, Ilha de Moçambique, Nacala-Porto, Malema (province of Nampula), Chiure (Cabo Delgado), Cuamba (Niassa) and Quelimane (Zambezia).
