Driving licences and vehicle number plates can no longer be issued in Mozambique because of a major computer breakdown, according to the independent television station STV.
The driving licenses and number plates are among the main responsibilities of the National Land Transport Institute (INATTER). Its computer system was installed by a South African company in 2007, as part of modernizing the institute.
But the system stopped working a week ago, on 13 June, and to date nobody has found the cause of the breakdown. The director of INATTER services, Manuel Joaquim, said “because of the nature of the breakdown, we have redoubled efforts locally to identify institutions which can help our people to discover why the system has been paralysed”.
There is no back-up system, and so all the services which depend on the INATTER computer system have ground to a halt.
“We are aware of the problems this situation is causing, but right now we have no alternative”, said Joaquim. “We are doing all that we can to restore the system and create a back-up”.
At first INATTER believed the breakdown was something simple and it could be fixed within 48 hours. But it became clear that the problem was much more serious. INATTER says that the only solution now, is to call back the South African company which installed the system.
Joaquim insisted that no information has been lost, and that all the data on the computers has been adequately stored and can be recovered.
