A few days ago, nine firearms – seven shotguns and two [Makarov] pistols – were found in the Sommerschield neighbourhood, a prime area in Maputo.
The information is contained in the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique weekly communiqué, which also notes the seizure of 47 shotgun cartridges and five rounds of ammunition.
According to the PRM, the weapons were abandoned by unidentified individuals when they became aware of a police patrol on August 9.
Overall, according to the corporation, 13 firearms were seized across the country, including three pistols, eight short-guns, a shotgun and a G-3 semi-automatic rifle.
In the weekly note, the corporation also reports the detention during the past week of 855 individuals nationwide: 582 for violating borders, 80 for illegal immigration and 193 for common crimes.
The PRM have announced several discoveries of abandoned firearms in recent weeks. Earlier this month, six firearms and 57 rounds of pistol ammunition were found in a briefcase in the Chali neighbourhood, KaTembe municipal district [Maputo].
These weapons are being found at a time when Mozambique is facing instability in the centre of the country and in districts of central and northern Cabo Delgado, in addition to a wave of kidnappings, robberies and armed attacks felt in various parts of the country.
