Mozambique: Nine children suspected of having polio in Inhambane

In the first six months of this year, Inhambane province recorded nine cases of children with acute flaccid paralysis, a symptom of poliomyelitis (‘polio’).
According to Sónia Mahesso, director of the Provincial Health Service in Inhambane, the suspicion stems from the children’s symptoms, starting with fever rapidly evolving to loss of muscle strength (‘acute flaccid paralysis’).
By Saturday, the health sector in Inhambane had vaccinated 196,000 out of a total of 320,000 children against polio.
In addition to immunizing, the teams were also tasked with identifying new cases, carrying out diagnostic surveys and ongoing monitoring of children.
The disease had previously been considered eradicated in Mozambique.
