The province of Niassa occupied the first position among seed cotton producing regions in the country in the latest agricultural season, harvesting some 18,500 tonnes of the product. The final results were released recently in the city of Cuamba.
The ginning of the harvest will result in around 7,000 tons of the fibre known as “white gold”, and its sale on the international market is expected to fetch about 796 million meticais (gross revenue) for the company that promotes this cash crop, the Sociedade Algodoeira do Niassa (SAN).
SAN, based in Cuamba district, considered the country’s cotton capital, also promotes the culture in Mecanhelas, Mandimba, Maúa, Metarica, Nipepe, Majune and Marrupa.
