The Niassa Lion Project organization, which manages the Mariri Environmental Centre in the Niassa Special Reserve, says two of its scouts are still missing, one month after the first terrorist attack on the site.
In a statement published on its Facebook page, the Niassa Lion Project reports that the search for the missing scouts, Pires and Carlitos, is ongoing, while another scout is receiving medical care in Maputo. The families of the missing and the fatal victims are receiving support from the organization, it adds.
“Our two scouts, Pires and Carlitos, are still missing. We remember the two killed at Kambako and the soldiers. All the brothers, fathers, sons, husbands,” the organization laments, adding in another post dated May 20 that it is still too early to return to the Mariri Environmental Centre, since there are signs that the insurgents are still active in the forests surrounding the region.
“Many people are asking when we can return to Mariri Environmental Centre and our home. The buildings are still standing. But sadly, it is still too dangerous. Insurgents remain active in the eastern section of Niassa Reserve, and the military presence continues, with regular contacts and further loss of life,” another publication by the Niassa Lion Project reads.
Despite the unstable situation, the organization highlights the actions underway to resume activities, such as the creation of a temporary office at the Mecula headquarters. It also guarantees that it is working to ensure that the 57 scholarship students continue their studies and complete their technical training.
