The people of Ngonwanine, in Chongoene, Gaza province, have recovered around 3,000 hectares usurped by Xai-Xai residents. Chongoene administrator Artur Macamo condemned the invasion and illegal subdivision and advanced measures to prevent any repetition.
“It was not a good attitude, because they should have approached the district government to ask where there is space. The fact that you see a piece of land that is not yet being used does not mean that there is no one there – there was someone there,” Macamo said. “Chongoene is a village and there is no space that does not have an owner.”
Macamo explained that it was the community itself that had organized to demand redress from the invaders and there were conversations in order to reach a consensus. The administrator said the government was available to make an appropriate division if the land owners accepted.
“This is an urban area, it’s a village. So, there are rules for planning and subdivision,” Macamo explained. “The people who went there to demonstrate did not approach the government, because if they had, we could have given up areas that do not need to be negotiated with anyone,” he said.
