Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM) is building a new port at Ressano Garcia to avoid congestion on the EN4 road linking Mozambique and South Africa, an official source told Lusa on Friday.
The port, which is expected to be completed in March 2020, will be located 98km from the Port of Maputo, ensuring that cargo trucks coming from South Africa do not need to travel to the centre of the capital, which is now happening.
The increase in traffic on the EN4 is the result of operational problems in the South African rail system, which has forced a considerable number of customers to use the land route.
Official data showed that by 2015, 90% of Mozambique’s heavy cargo was transported by road, which contributes to the rapid destruction of access roads, as well as weakening flexibility in the movement of goods.
It is estimated that the port of Maputo, the country’s largest port, receives more than 1,000 cargo trucks per day, mainly from neighbouring countries, accelerating existing levels of congestion.
