Mozambican legislation to combat people trafficking is inadequate and should be updated to be more effective, Mozambique’s attorney general’s office said on Wednesday.
Amabélia Chuquela, deputy attorney general, hoped parliament would approve a new law and regulations on trafficking.
In an interview with Radio Mozambique, Chuquela deplored the fact that Mozambique still does not have an action plan against human trafficking and urged the government to come up with one.
She said that the country recorded five cases of human trafficking in the first half of the year against eight in 2018, and warned that numbers were likely to be considerably higher because cases had not been reported to the authorities.
On the other hand, the cases that reach the authorities must be tried and their perpetrators held criminally responsible so as to discourage human trafficking, she said.
