The new apostolic administrator of the diocese of Pemba, António Juliasse Ferreira Sandramo, on Thursday indicated armed violence in Cabo Delgado as one of his main concerns.
“It is a very big concern for everyone and, even before I came here, I was already sensitive to it,” Sandramo told Lusa moments after arriving in the diocese.
Bishop Sandramo will lead the diocese of the provincial capital until the appointment of a new bishop, after Pope Francis transferred Luiz Fernando Lisboa, who was Bishop of Pemba since 2013, to Cachoeiro de Itapemirim in Brazil.
Cabo Delgado has been facing a humanitarian crisis for three years caused by armed attacks in districts in the north of the province, with more than 2,000 deaths and 560,000 displaced, without adequate housing or food, mainly to the provincial capital, Pemba.
“Now, I will experience these difficulties up close, unlike the past, when I followed them from Maputo,” Sandramo added.
Luiz Fernando Lisboa, who accompanied the new apostolic administrator on his first day, called for the people of Cabo Delgado to be united against the challenges facing the province, highlighting the messages of hope that Pope Francis had sent.
“I am going to my new mission smoothly, but I am not happy to leave Africa, because it is the place where I always wanted to be. But we of the church obey God above all, and have our Pope as general coordinator,” he declared.
