Mozambican Prime Minister Benvinda Levi has challenged the National Inspectorate of Economic Activities (INAE) to strengthen measures to prevent illegal trade and counterfeiting.
According to Levi, who was speaking on Thursday, in Maputo, at a ceremony in which she swore into office Shaquila Mohamed as the new INAE chairwoman, inspections must also be focused on prevention and education, rather than just punishment.
She stressed that INAE must improve its measures against the sale of alcoholic drinks to minors under the age of 18 as well as its methods aimed at fighting practices that tarnish economic agents and harm the country.
“It is essential to educate, raise awareness, and guide economic operators, especially Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), so that they understand and comply with the regulations governing their activities”, she said.

To this end, it is crucial that INAE makes itself known throughout Mozambique, acting as an interlocutor that encourages good practices in the actions of all economic agents, for the benefit of consumers and the communities they serve.
“We recommend that the new INAE leadership continue promoting preventive and repressive actions with balance, discernment, and responsibility. It is INAE’s responsibility to ensure that the public interest prevails in all circumstances”, she said
According to Levi, “INAE must play an important role in the exercise of economic activities, ensuring compliance with regulations against public health violations, and protecting citizens and legitimate operators.”
For her turn, Mohamed, as the new INAE inspector general, said she will follow the recommendations, but “I still have to arrive, get to know the place, get to know the work, and continue what the previous inspector general (Rita Freitas) did very well.”
