The International Relations Commission of the Mozambican parliament, the Assembly of the Republic, believes that establishing new diplomatic missions abroad may boost the country’s image.
According to the Commission’s chairperson, Catarina António, who was speaking to reporters on Monday, after a parliamentary hearing of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Manuela Lucas, on the proposal for the Government’s Five Year Programme (PQG 2025-2029), more diplomatic missions may also assist those people who carry out important commercial activities in cities where Mozambique has no embassy or consulate.
“This will help to monitor all Mozambicans who make up the community in the diaspora. The diplomatic missions will be set up in various countries where Mozambicans are dominant in trade. The proposal will be submitted later in the plenary session of the parliament”, she said.
According to the PQG 2025-2029 proposal, during the current year, the government expects to establish two new diplomatic missions abroad. The measure will cost the state coffers around 2.1 million meticais (about 32,850 dollars at the current exchange rate).
The Commission members also called on the government to set up a consulate in the Chinese province of Guangzhou, given the growing demand for consular services from Mozambicans travelling there on business, and the fact that most African countries have already set up consulates there.
Responding to the appeal, the minister said that “for us it was an opportunity to be able to contribute to this discussion of the PQG proposal, which will be debated and analysed in the plenary session of Parliament this week”
