The construction is being planned of a new bridge over the Save river to connect the districts of Massangena in the province of Gaza and Mussurize and Machaze, in Manica, as an alternative to the National Highway Number One (N1).
A contract for consultancy services has been awarded for the preparation of the preliminary project and supervision of the infrastructure works and respective accesses on the R441 road in the two provinces.
The work in question is budgeted at just over 52 million meticais, financed by the government, and will be carried out by the company Civil and Planning Group, Moçambique.
Notícias has learned that the construction of the bridge is in line with the government’s strategy of creating an alternative road to the N1 connecting the north and south of the country, and passing through Macia, Chókwè, Guijá, Mabalane, Mapai, Massangena, Mossurize and Chimoio all the way to Muxúnguè or Inchope.
The section under consideration will start in the district of Bilene and go all the way to Inchope, bypassing the province of Inhambane, which will shorten distances for people leaving from the north of Gaza province. The alternative road may be included in the government’s next Five-Year Programme, to be approved by the Assembly of the Republic, so as to ensure that the investments needed for the operation are scrutinised.
The process of mobilising funding to implement the initiative has however already begun, on the grounds that the country cannot continue to depend on a single highway for the north-south connection, since any abnormal situation on the road creates constraints on all traffic.
