Mozambique: New Beira fishing port begins operations – AIM

The new fishing port in the central Mozambican city of Beira, considered one of the most modern in the SADC (Southern African Development Community) region, on Monday began operating officially.

16 industrial fishing shops can dock simultaneously, compared with eight in the previous port. Its ice making factory, with six cold stores, can produce 60 tonnes of ice a day to preserve fisheries produce.

Cited in Monday’s issue of the Maputo daily “Noticias”, the director of the port, Carlos Calenga, guaranteed that everything is ready for take-off, after the installations received an operating licence from the National Fisheries Institute.

The new fishing port is starting operations after complete repair of the damage caused by cyclone Idai, which hit Beira in March.

The reconstruction and expansion of the fishing port was budgeted at 120 million US dollars, and the contractor was the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC). It was provisionally handed over to the government on 1 November 2018, and since then has been operating on an experimental basis.

The fishing port has the installed capacity to process 70,000 tonnes of produce a year.
