The president of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, said on Friday that the construction of the fishing port in Angoche, Nampula province, an investment of more than $30 million, represents the strategy of “deconcentrating life” in the country.
“A lot is going to happen here in Angoche,” said Nyusi after laying the foundation stone for the project, which has funding from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) and the OPEC Development Fund.
“Angoche’s fish will be first class,” added the head of state, guaranteeing that the port, which is to be completed in 24 months, represents the realisation of a “dream” of the local population, contributing to “income generation, job creation and consolidation of the value chain” of various sectors in the north of the country.
It will make it possible to “deconcentrate life,” assured Nysusi. “Nobody should leave here in search of electricity or ice.”
The project includes the construction of a 380 metre long quay, 30 metres wide, which will allow 40 craft, ten semi-industrial and 15 industrial vessels to dock.
It is also to have seven cold rooms with a capacity for 350 tonnes of fish and two quick-freezing chambers for 200 tonnes, as well as a fish processing room and an ice production plant with a capacity for 460 tonnes.
“A lot is going to happen here in Angoche,” assured the head of state, estimating that construction will mobilise around 400 workers and that in the operational phase the new port will directly employ around 100 people.
The city of Angoche, the seat of the district, has more than 100,000 inhabitants and fishing is one of its main economic activities.
