The Mozambican government is negotiating prisoner transfer agreements with SADC countries. Agreements have already been concluded with Tanzania and Zimbabwe, with only signing dates remaining to be set.
According to the Director General of the Prison Service National, Eduardo Mussanhane, talks are underway with counterparts in South Africa, Zambia, Botswana and Malawi and will soon culminate in the signing of similar agreements.
Currently, about three thousand Mozambicans are serving sentences in the jails of other African and South American countries, some facing life imprisonment and others sentenced to death. Most are in South Africa, where 2,600 nationals are incarcerated. Brazil has 50 and Malawi about the same number.
As agreements are implemented, Mozambicans incarcerated in other countries will be eligible to transfer back to Mozambique to serve out their sentences, with Mussanhane warning that Mozambique must be ready to take in any prisoners extradited.
