Mozambique will have to invest $3.3 billion (€2.9 billion) to ensure universal access to water and sanitation by 2030, the deputy minister of Housing and Public Works, Víctor Tauacale said.
Tauacale, quoted by Mozambican daily Notícias, noted the financial effort required to bring water and sanitation to all Mozambicans as he spoke at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Administration (AIAS) and Operation Water, a US non-governmental organisation.
For the sanitation sector, US$2.2 billion needs to be raised and US$1.1 billion for the water sector.
Tauacale said that improving access to water and sanitation would only be possible through public private partnerships, pointing to the benefits of partnering with Operation Water as an example.
The memorandum of understanding will give 500,000 people access to water and sanitation through the construction of water supply systems and provides for a US$50 million investment in studies and infrastructure work.
Operation Water founder and CEO Ryan Phillips signed the Mo and said that his organisation’s goal is to ensure that drinking water is available to more and more people at prices they can afford. To this end, Operation Water develops water infrastructure projects in various parts of the world. Philips considered signing the memorandum of understanding with the Mozambican authorities as a critical phase of the project.
“We expect fruitful collaboration and a successful project, especially for beneficiaries to have access to safe drinking water,” he reiterated, cited by O País.
