Mozambique’s national sports teams – of various modalities and levels and including Olympic athletes – will soon receive doses of the Russian anti-Covid-19 vaccine known as “Sputnik-V”, Minister-Counsellor of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the country, Alexander Nuralov announced in Maputo on Thursday.
Nuralov revealed the good news after a meeting with Mozambican Secretary of State for Sports Carlos Gilberto Mendes and president of the Mozambican Olympic Committee, Aníbal Manave.
Nuralov said the vaccine donation was recently decided by the Russian Ministry of Sports, which plans to supply doses to athletes from all African countries, including Mozambique.
The exact quantity to be supplied to Mozambique has not yet been decided upon, nor the date of its arrival in the country.
The Russian official said the Mozambican State Secretariat for Sports would formalise the country’s interest in obtaining the vaccine and indicate over the next few days the quantities required.
“This is a Ministry of Sports plan to help sportspeople on the African continent, while at the same time internationalising the Sputnik-V vaccine,” Minister-Counsellor Nuralov said, to which Secretary of State Mendes replied that the Russian gesture was further proof of the long-standing brotherhood between the peoples of Russia and Mozambique.
Mendes said that the Secretariat of State would contact sports federations for the precise numbers of athletes who have competitions in the near future, so that the vaccination process is as comprehensive as possible.
“We know more or less the number of athletes going, for example, to the Olympic Games, but we have many other campaigns this year, including African and regional championships. This vaccine will not only be administered to athletes, but also to support staff and others in the teams,” Gilberto Mendes explained.
According to Alexander Nuralov, the Russian vaccine has an efficiency of 91.6% and is one of the least demanding in terms of conservation [storage] conditions.
