A group of around 50 supposed ‘Naparamas’ have surrendered to the authorities at Mutuali administrative post, in Malema district, Nampula province.
The event left Mutuali once again experiencing the tranquillity that had not existed there for four months.
Some of the men who were part of the group that had been terrorizing the population since December surrendered this Monday before the population and the governor of Nampula, showing remorse for the violence they had perpetrated.
They say they were deceived, but claim that their motivation was legitimate because they were protesting against social exclusion, and going on to ask the government to look after them and oversee their social reintegration.
The governor of Nampula, Eduardo Abdula, promised to analyse the requests within the government’s priorities and guaranteed to respond to some of the needs listed by the men who surrendered.
In total there are around 50 men, among them some elderly men who fought during the civil war. Another notable feature is that some of them are from Niassa and Cabo Delgado, and it is not known whether they have been in Nampula only since December or longer.
