Road traffic between Nampula and Cabo Delgado on the National Highway Number 1 (N1) has been re-established following emergency work on a bridge over the Monapo River in Namialo, Meconta district.
The Monapo river bridge was damaged by Tropical Storm Jude, which caused part of the bridge to collapse, interrupting traffic on the N1, the country’s main north-south highway.
During the period of closure, the river was crossed by boat, making the transport of people and goods more difficult and adversely affecting the regional economy.
With the reopening of traffic, the flow of goods and services between Nampula and Cabo Delgado is expected to return to normal, to the benefit especially of districts that were isolated during the hiatus.
The reestablishment of this road link was witnessed by the governor of Nampula province, Eduardo Abdula, who explained that the reopening now allows for the safe circulation of all types of vehicles on that stretch and the flow of essential products.
Currently, work is underway to permanently restore the bridge over the Monapo river, in particular, rebuilding access to the infrastructure.
Traffic on the detour is currently conditioned by a “stop-go” system, and Abdula urged motorists and the general public to respect convention to avoid congestion and traffic accidents.
To ensure the safety of road users, traffic on the detour is open only from 5:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.. The diversion is now properly signposted and has permanent traffic guides to ensure the safety and convenience of users.
