According to information obtained by Noticias up to the close of yesterday’s edition, 132 polling tables in the Nampula by-election had been counted out of a total of 401 in 52 voting stations, with Frelimo candidate Amisse Cololo leading the count with 12,296 votes against 10,193 of Paul Vahanle, and 2,381 for MDM candidate Carlos Saide.
Mario Albino of Amusi and Filomena Mutoropa of Pahumo had 970 and 209 votes respectively.
Approximately 297,000 voters were eligible to vote in the Nampula by-election in a process which, despite having taken place in an orderly and peaceful manner, was tarnished by the late opening of some polling stations and by a generally poor turnout.
The initial count was expected to be complete this morning, and the results forwarded to the Nampula City Elections Commission, as stipulated in the Electoral Law.
Nampula police said that although voting took place in an orderly and peaceful manner, there were some cases of electoral wrongdoing. PRM spokesman Zacarias Nacuti said that, in some cases, members of political parties were bussed in from other parts of the province to vote, while others had tried to campaign at the polling station, which is forbidden.
Those involved would be subject to criminal procedures, he said.
