Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday inaugurated the connection of the Nihessiue administrative post, in the northern province of Nampula, to the national electricity grid.
He took the opportunity to urge the public to remain vigilant against the theft of electricity and the sabotage of electrical infrastructures.
Nyusi said the arrival of electricity in Nihessiue will bring substantial improvements in living conditions. “Electricity is not just for illumination, but also for production”, he said. “In a short while we shall see businesses prospering here”.
Connecting Nihessiue to the grid involved building 25 kilometres of medium voltage transmission line and 10 kilometres of low voltage line. 150 lampposts were installed for public lighting and five transformer posts.
1,000 new connections were envisaged for the first phase of electrification, but so far only 183 new customers have been connected. The new transmission line reaches the Nihessiue administrative post headquarters, and the villages of Nathepo, Nacuca and Nacorare.
The electrification cost 89 million meticais (about 1.4 million US dollars, at the current exchange rate), entirely financed out of the Mozambican state budget.
There are 70 administrative posts in Nampula province. So far 55 have been electrified, leaving 15 to be electrified, either through connection to the grid, or through isolated systems, normally powered by solar panels.
